This is an estimate based on standard item volumes from the Buzz Movers inventory list. It is not a quote. Your final volume and price are confirmed by your Buzz Movers consultant after checking your full inventory and access at both addresses.

How the Moving Volume Calculator Works

The calculator follows the Buzz Movers inventory list: 203 household items across ten areas of the home, from the lounge and bedrooms to the garage, patio and boxes. Open a room, tap + for each item you are moving, and the total volume updates as you go. Search for an item by name if you know what you are looking for. A fridge, a couch, a trampoline.

Your inventory stays saved on your device, so you can close the page, check the spare room and come back to finish it. When you are done, your total shows in cubic metres along with the number of items.

How Moving Volume Is Worked Out

Every item on the list has a standard volume in cubic feet. A 3 seater couch is 60 cubic feet. A double door fridge is 80. A standard 50cm by 50cm box is 5. The calculator adds up the cubic feet for everything you select and converts the total to cubic metres by dividing by 35, the same formula used on the Buzz Movers inventory spreadsheet.

Worked example: three rooms

Here is how a typical lounge, main bedroom and kitchen add up using the inventory list volumes:

  • Lounge: 3 seater couch (60 cf), two armchairs (30 cf), coffee table (10 cf), TV cabinet (30 cf), 40 to 55 inch flat screen TV (15 cf) and a rug (3 cf). Total 148 cubic feet, or 4.23 m³.
  • Main bedroom: queen bed (65 cf), two bedside pedestals (16 cf), 3 door wardrobe (65 cf), chest of drawers (20 cf) and a medium dressing table (25 cf). Total 191 cubic feet, or 5.46 m³.
  • Kitchen and laundry: double door fridge (80 cf), washing machine (20 cf), tumble dryer (20 cf), microwave (5 cf) and ten standard boxes (50 cf). Total 175 cubic feet, or 5.00 m³.

Those three rooms come to 514 cubic feet, or 14.69 m³. Every home is different, which is why the calculator works from your actual items rather than the number of bedrooms.

The Biggest Items on a Moving Inventory

A few items take up far more space than people expect. On the Buzz Movers inventory list, a motorbike is 150 cubic feet (4.29 m³). An L-shaped couch, an upright piano and a dismantled jungle gym are 120 cubic feet each (3.43 m³). A patio lounge suite is 110 cubic feet. A pool table, an all-in-one home gym, a large bar unit and a dismantled Wendy house are 100 cubic feet each (2.86 m³).

Moving a piano, a motorcycle or a pool table? These are specialist moves that need the right equipment and a crew that has done it before, so mention them when you ask for your quote.

What Changes Your Final Moving Quote

Volume is the starting point, not the whole picture. Your Buzz Movers consultant checks the details that affect how the move runs on the day:

  • Truck access: narrow driveways, tight corners and overhanging trees can mean the truck parks further from your home.
  • Complex restrictions: many complexes have weight and height limits for large trucks at loading and at delivery.
  • Shuttle service: if the truck has to park more than 50 metres from your home, a shuttle may be needed at an extra cost.
  • Stairs and lifts at both addresses.
  • Packing, wrapping and boxing: whether you want the packing service and how many boxes.
  • Dismantling and reassembly of beds, wardrobes and other furniture.
  • Storage between move-out and move-in, and for how long. See storage solutions.
  • Vehicle transport if a car is moving with your household.

Once your inventory and access are confirmed, the price you are quoted is final. No fuel levies, stair charges or volume adjustments are added on the day, and every booking carries a full money-back guarantee.

Dedicated Truck or Shared Load?

Your volume also helps you choose how your furniture travels on a long distance move. A dedicated truck carries your load only, on a fixed, agreed delivery date. A shared load combines your furniture with other moves on the same route, which lowers the cost, with delivery inside a window instead of on a set day. Both travel with goods-in-transit insurance. The guide to shared loads versus dedicated trucks sets out the difference in full.

Moving volume calculator
questions answered

The calculator gives an estimate based on the standard item volumes on the Buzz Movers inventory list. It is accurate for the items you select, but the real size of your furniture can vary. Your final volume is confirmed by your Buzz Movers consultant after checking your full inventory and access at both addresses.
Divide the total cubic feet by 35. That is the conversion used on the Buzz Movers inventory spreadsheet and in this calculator. For example, 175 cubic feet divided by 35 is 5 cubic metres.
No. The calculator estimates volume only. Your price comes from a quote, once your consultant has confirmed your inventory, access and any extras like packing or storage. Once quoted, the price is final, with no fuel levies, stair charges or volume adjustments added on the day.
Yes. On the inventory list, a standard 50cm by 50cm box is 5 cubic feet (0.14 m³). Large boxes, wardrobe boxes and plastic storage crates are 10 cubic feet each (0.29 m³). Add them in the Boxes and Crates section of the calculator.
Pick the closest item by size, or leave it out and mention it when you request your quote. The Buzz Movers inventory form has an extras section for anything not on the standard list, and your consultant will add it to your volume.
Your total volume and item count are free to see without any details. If you want the room-by-room breakdown, enter your name, email and phone number and it is emailed to you. A Buzz Movers consultant then follows up to confirm the detail and give you an exact quote.
Truck access at both addresses, complex weight and height restrictions, stairs, whether a shuttle is needed when the truck parks more than 50 metres from your home, packing and boxing, dismantling and reassembly, storage and vehicle transport.
Choose a dedicated truck if your moving date is fixed, because only a dedicated truck delivers on an agreed day. Choose a shared load if your date is flexible and cost matters most. Buzz Movers runs both on its long distance routes, with goods-in-transit insurance on each.

Moving Volume Calculator

Estimate Your Move in Cubic Metres

A moving volume calculator turns your furniture list into a number a removal company can plan with. The Buzz Movers calculator uses 203 items from its own inventory list, each with a standard volume in cubic feet, and converts the total to cubic metres. Add your items room by room, see your total instantly, and use it to compare quotes on a like-for-like basis.

Removal Volume Calculator

The Same Volumes a Removal Company Uses

Most removal volume calculators use generic figures. This one uses the volumes Buzz Movers works from when it quotes a move. A 3 seater couch is 60 cubic feet. A queen bed is 65. A double door fridge is 80. The total you see is built on the same numbers your consultant starts with.

Cubic Metre Calculator for Moving

From Cubic Feet to Cubic Metres

A cubic metre calculator for moving needs one conversion: divide cubic feet by 35. The Buzz Movers inventory spreadsheet uses that formula, and so does the calculator. So 148 cubic feet for a furnished lounge becomes 4.23 m³, and 514 cubic feet for a lounge, bedroom and kitchen becomes 14.69 m³.

How Many Cubic Metres to Move a House

Why Bedrooms Are a Poor Guide

How many cubic metres does it take to move a house? It depends on what is in it. Two three bedroom homes can differ by a whole truckload once you count the garage, the patio furniture and the boxes. That is why the Buzz Movers calculator works from your items, not your bedroom count, and why the final figure is confirmed by a consultant.

Furniture Volume Calculator

Room-by-Room Furniture Volumes

A furniture volume calculator should cover more than the lounge. The Buzz Movers list covers the lounge, study, dining room, hall, bedrooms, kitchen, pantry and laundry, patio, garage and storeroom, miscellaneous items like bicycles and pool tables, and boxes and crates. Every item shows its volume in cubic metres before you add it.

Moving Inventory List

The Buzz Movers Inventory List, Online

The moving inventory list is where every accurate quote starts. Buzz Movers asks every client to mark off what is moving, room by room, because that sets the volume and the price. The online calculator is the same list, with the adding up done for you and a copy emailed to you when you are finished.

Removals Inventory Checklist

Everything to Mark Off Before Moving Day

A removals inventory checklist covers the furniture, and also the details that change how the move runs. Truck access at both addresses. Complex weight and height restrictions. Stairs and lifts. Whether you need boxes, wrapping, dismantling, storage or vehicle transport. Buzz Movers checks all of it before your date is confirmed.

How Big a Moving Truck Do I Need

Start With Your Volume

How big a moving truck do you need? Start with your volume in cubic metres. Once you know it, your Buzz Movers consultant matches the truck to your load and checks that it can get into your street, driveway or complex. If a large truck cannot reach your door, a shuttle service may be needed.

Volume of a Couch for Moving

Couch Volumes From 1 Seater to L-Shaped

Couch volumes on the Buzz Movers inventory list: a 1 seater is 25 cubic feet (0.71 m³), a 2 seater is 40 (1.14 m³), a 3 seater is 60 (1.71 m³), a 4 seater is 80 (2.29 m³) and an L-shaped couch is 120 (3.43 m³). A day bed is 45 cubic feet and a chaise lounge is 30.

Volume of a Bed for Moving

Beds, Mattresses and Wardrobes

Bed volumes on the inventory list: a single bed is 40 cubic feet (1.14 m³), a double or queen is 65 (1.86 m³) and a king is 80 (2.29 m³). A sleeper couch is 60. Wardrobes run from 30 cubic feet for one door to 50 for two doors and 65 for three.

Volume of a Fridge for Moving

Kitchen and Laundry Appliances

Fridge volumes on the inventory list: a single door fridge is 40 cubic feet (1.14 m³) and a double door fridge is 80 (2.29 m³). A box deepfreeze is 25. A washing machine, a tumble dryer and a dishwasher are 20 cubic feet each, and a large stove is 25.

How Many Boxes Do I Need to Move

Boxes Add Up Faster Than You Think

How many boxes do you need to move? Count them into your volume either way. A standard 50cm by 50cm box is 5 cubic feet (0.14 m³). Large boxes, wardrobe boxes and plastic crates are 10 cubic feet each. Forty standard boxes add 200 cubic feet, or 5.71 m³, to your move. Buzz Movers supplies boxes and offers a full box packing service.

Moving Estimate South Africa

An Estimate First, an Exact Quote Second

A moving estimate in South Africa is only as good as the inventory behind it. The Buzz Movers calculator gives you a volume estimate in minutes. Your consultant then confirms your inventory, checks access and gives you an exact quote. Once quoted, the price is final, with a full money-back guarantee on every booking.

Furniture Removal Quote

What You Need Before You Ask for a Quote

A furniture removal quote needs four things: your moving date, your collection address, your delivery address and your inventory. Add whether you want a dedicated truck or a shared load, and your consultant has everything needed to check access and fix your price. The calculator covers the inventory part.

Long Distance Moving Estimate

Volume Decides How Your Load Travels

A long distance moving estimate starts with volume, and volume shapes the choice between a dedicated truck and a shared load. A dedicated truck carries your load only on a fixed, agreed date. A shared load costs less and delivers within a window. Buzz Movers runs both between Gauteng, the Western Cape, the Garden Route and KwaZulu-Natal.

Piano and Motorbike Moving Volume

Specialist Items Take the Most Space

Specialist items are the biggest on any moving inventory. A motorbike is 150 cubic feet (4.29 m³). An upright piano is 120 (3.43 m³). A pool table and an all-in-one home gym are 100 each. Buzz Movers handles specialist moves including pianos, motorcycles, fine art and bulky furniture that needs hoisting.
