A shared load puts your goods on a truck with other clients’ loads, so you pay only for the space you use and receive a delivery window. A dedicated truck carries only your load and delivers on a fixed date. Choose a shared load for a smaller move with flexible dates, and a dedicated truck when a specific day matters.
Most long distance movers in South Africa sell both. The quotes can look wildly different for the same route, and that gap confuses people. It is not a pricing trick. You are comparing two different products.
What is a shared load?
A shared load is a long distance move where several clients’ loads travel on one truck. Each load is inventoried and kept separate, and the truck runs a route that covers every collection and delivery on board.
You pay for the volume your goods take up, not for the whole vehicle. That is the appeal of shared truck moving: you buy shared moving truck space instead of hiring the truck, so you only pay for the space your load takes up. The trade-off is timing. Because the route is built around several clients, you get a delivery window rather than a delivery day. Published shared-load windows from South African movers on the Cape Town to Johannesburg corridor run from about three days to more than a week.
What is a dedicated truck?
A dedicated truck carries one client’s load and nothing else. It collects on your date, drives your route and delivers on the date in your quote.
You pay for the whole vehicle, so it costs more. In return, nobody else’s packing, paperwork or delivery address affects your timeline.
Shared load vs dedicated truck at a glance
| Shared load | Dedicated truck | |
|---|---|---|
| Who is on the truck | Several clients | You only |
| Delivery | A window | A fixed date |
| What you pay for | The space your load takes up | The whole vehicle |
| Route | Built around every client on board | Your collection and delivery addresses only |
| Handling | Can be moved at other clients’ stops | Loaded once, offloaded once |
| Best for | Flats, small homes, a few items, flexible dates | Full homes, office moves, fixed dates, high value items |
How much cheaper is a shared load?
South African movers commonly advertise shared-load savings of 40 to 60 percent over a dedicated truck for a small move. The key words are “small move”.
A shared load is priced on your volume. A dedicated truck is priced on the vehicle. When your load fills a small corner of the truck, the difference is large. As your load grows towards a full truck, you are buying a bigger and bigger share of the same vehicle, and the saving shrinks. A full three or four bedroom home on a shared load often saves far less than the advertised percentage suggests, and you still give up a fixed date.
So ask for both prices on the same inventory. The comparison only means something when the volume is identical. For a small load, a shared load is a great way to save money. For a full home, it is often less cost effective than it looks, and the dedicated truck may be the better of your moving options once you price in the date.
What does a delivery window actually cost you?
The quote shows what you save. It does not show what the window costs. Add these up before you decide:
- Nights in a guesthouse or with family while you wait at the new address
- Rent or bond overlap if you have to keep the old place longer
- Storage if the window and your occupation date do not line up
- Leave days, because someone has to be at the new address when the truck arrives
- For a business, every trading day without desks, IT and stock
If those costs come close to the price difference, the shared load stops being the cheaper option.
How often is your load handled?
This is the part most comparisons skip. On a dedicated truck your goods are loaded once and offloaded once.
A shared truck is loaded in sequence as it collects from each client. At every delivery stop, the crew has to reach that client’s goods. Depending on how the truck was packed, other loads can be shifted to get there. More movement means more chances for a knock. Professional wrapping and good loading reduce the risk, but they do not remove it. If you are moving antiques, a piano, glass or art, weigh that before choosing on price alone.
Is a shared load the same as a backload?
No. A backload is space on a truck returning from a delivery it has already done. The mover sells the empty return trip at a discount so the truck is not travelling empty.
The catch is that a backload only exists when someone else booked the outbound move. Its timing follows that job, not yours. A shared load runs as a planned, consolidated trip. If a quote says “backload”, ask what happens to your date if the outbound job moves.
Which should you choose?
Use one test: does anything depend on your goods arriving on a specific day?
Choose a shared load when:
- You are moving a flat, a small home or a few items
- You have somewhere to stay and nothing urgent waiting at the other end
- Budget matters more than the exact day
Choose a dedicated truck when:
- A lease ends, a transfer registers or a job starts on a set date
- You are moving a full home or an office
- You are moving fragile or high value items
- Your load is large enough that the shared-load saving is small
Is your load insured on a shared truck?
It should be, and the question is worth more on a shared load than on a dedicated one. Several clients’ goods sit in one vehicle, so ask how the mover’s cover applies to your part of the load. We explain what to ask in our guide to goods-in-transit insurance when moving.
Questions to ask any mover before you book
- Is this quote for a shared load, a backload or a dedicated truck?
- What is the delivery window, in days, from collection to delivery?
- Is my load taken straight onto the truck, or held somewhere before departure?
- How is my load kept separate from other clients’ goods?
- What insurance applies to my goods, and what is the limit?
- What is the price for a dedicated truck on the same inventory?
How Buzz Movers runs both
Buzz Movers offers shared load moving and dedicated trucks, with its own branches at both ends of its main corridor: Strand in the Western Cape and Midrand in Gauteng. Your quote is built on your inventory and is all-inclusive, your load travels with goods-in-transit insurance, and every truck is GPS tracked with updates by WhatsApp and email. On a dedicated truck, your date and price carry a full money-back guarantee, which is why Buzz Movers is the safe default for families and businesses moving between provinces on a fixed date. Not sure which fits? Answer four questions in our dedicated truck vs shared load tool.
On a dedicated truck, the 1,400 km run between Cape Town and Johannesburg is a two day drive on your date. See the route pages for Cape Town to Johannesburg and Johannesburg to Cape Town, or moves to the coast from Cape Town to the Garden Route and Johannesburg to the Garden Route. Every corridor is listed on our long distance moving page.
Moving a business? A full office relocation belongs on a dedicated truck. See business and office moves. If your dates and occupation do not line up, storage can bridge the gap.
Frequently asked questions
Is a shared load safe?
Yes, when the mover inventories each load, wraps it properly and keeps it separate on the truck. The added risk comes from extra handling at other clients’ stops, which matters most for fragile and high value items.
Why can a shared load not give me a fixed date?
The truck’s route is built around every client on board. A delay at one collection or delivery moves everyone behind it, so movers quote a window instead.
Can I move an office on a shared load?
A few workstations or a batch of equipment, yes. A full office relocation needs a fixed date and a crew that reinstates the space, which is a dedicated truck job.
Is a dedicated truck always faster?
From collection to delivery, yes, because the truck drives only your route. It is also the only option that gives you a delivery date you can plan around.
