These are rates published by South African removal companies for this corridor in 2026. They are not our rates. They are what the market says.

And here is where it gets awkward. Other operators publish figures for the same route at R4,500 to R7,000 for a one bedroom, R7,000 to R13,500 for two bedrooms and R13,500 to R26,000 for three. One advertises the corridor at R4,995 to R19,995. One large national mover contradicts itself across its own two pages, quoting a two bedroom dedicated load at R28,000 to R36,000 in one place and R32,000 to R42,000 in another.
A one bedroom move on the same road between the same two cities is quoted at R4,500 by one company and R18,000 by another. That is a four-fold spread, and it is not a mistake.
Why the Spread Is So Wide
Dedicated versus shared is most of it
A shared load puts your furniture on a truck with four, five or six other households. The truck departs when it is full and routes around everyone on board. You are splitting fuel, tolls, driver time and crew with strangers, which is genuinely cheaper. What you receive is a delivery window of several days rather than a delivery date.
A dedicated truck carries only your load. It collects on your date and delivers on your date. You are paying for the whole vehicle and crew for the full journey, both ways, because the truck has to get back.
Neither is the wrong answer. A small load with flexible dates is well suited to a shared load. A family with a lease ending on the 30th and a new one starting on the 1st is not.
The low numbers usually exclude things
The cheapest published figures tend to be transport only. Packing materials, labour, insurance and access charges are added later. That is how a R5,000 quote becomes a R12,000 invoice.
What Actually Determines Your Price
Quotes on this route are built on volume in cubic metres, not on weight and not on how many bedrooms you have. A sparsely furnished three bedroom house can price below a densely packed two bedroom flat.
Four things move the number:
- Volume, set by your inventory. This is why a proper room-by-room inventory list beats a phone estimate every time.
- Access at both ends. Stairs, lifts, narrow streets, estate vehicle limits and loading bay rules all change how long loading takes, and crew time is priced in.
- Packing. Anything from a few fragile items to the entire house, and the difference is significant.
- Your date. Month-end and the December to January window carry the highest demand across the whole industry.
Where the Extras Hide
Published add-on rates across the South African market, worth asking about before you sign anything:
- Pianos, safes and pool tables: R1,000 to R3,000 in handling fees
- Upper floors without a lift: R500 to R1,500 in additional labour
- Professional packing: R45 to R75 per box
- Storage: R350 to R1,200 per cubic metre per month, depending on the facility
- Vehicle transport: usually quoted separately and often on a dedicated transporter
- Waiting time: some movers bill by the hour if keys or paperwork run late

How to Compare Quotes Properly
Put every quote next to the same four questions.
Is this a dedicated truck or a shared load? If shared, is the answer a date or a window?
Is the price all-inclusive, and what specifically is excluded?
Is the delivery date in writing before the truck is booked, or is it an estimate?

Move mid-month rather than month-end. Demand across the industry peaks in the last week of every month, and pricing follows it.
Avoid December and January if you can. That window is both the busiest and the first to book out.
Declutter before the inventory, not after. Volume is the price, so every cubic metre you do not move is money you do not spend.
